Dual-Channel question

Hello all,

I have a quick question. I recently ordered another 512MB stick of memory for my computer. I ordered the same memory that I did when I originally built my computer awhile ago, and well I received it today. Well, it's not the same type, the new stick is double sided whereas my older stick is single sided. Except for that, everything else is identical. I know that my motherboard supports a dual-channel setup and I have them in the correct slots according to my manual, but still not recognizing the dual-channels. So I guess it won't work for me?

Dual sided and dual channel are not the same thing. Dual sided allows companies to release sticks of RAM in higher capacities without using high density RAM chips. Dual channel involves a different memory channel for each of two sticks of RAM, or each pair in a group of four. It increases memory bandwidth without having to increase clockspeed. Dual channel should work as long as you have 2 sticks of the same size in the appropriate slots. What are your system specs?

Yes, I know that dual sided memory is not the same thing as dual-channel. My question was, do the two memory sticks have to be dual-sided or single-sided for dual-channel to work, or can it be one of each?

In the motherboard manual it states that if you have two sticks to put them in slot one and three, with process of elimination I finally found the two appropriate slots. When I use CPUz to check, it still says single channel.
