dual channel vs quad channel

I have seen several parts lists that show dual memory being selected to put in a MOBO that supports quad channel memory.
Does that work? Any drawbacks (e.g. performance)?

It works.

But only at a reduced efficiency.

Actually, yes, quad channel has more bandwidth, and just like DRAM data rates (higher can be better depending on the game), the higher bandwidth can improve the gaming
