Looks like Nvidia is about to announce the GTX 1080 Ti, which is between the performance of a standard 1080 and a Titan XP.

But do you think that they will make a dual-GPU GTX 1090 for people who want SLI performance without taking up the extra space of a 2nd card inside of their case?

I don't see why not, since Pascal is Nvidia's most energy-efficient GPU yet and they shouldn't have any problem with putting to slightly downclocked chips onto a single PCB.

Solution
Not going to happen, not a large enough market, and people will just SLI Titans if they want that experience.
Nvidia stopped making x90 cards ages ago purely for that reason, it wasn't cost or power efficient, and it was unnecessary resulting in too much overhead.

It hasn't been that long ago. The Titan Z, the 690, 590, and 295's are not all that old, but it I too doubt they'll make one. The primary reason they do is to show they have the fastest card. They already have the fastest card, and AMD doesn't show signs that they'll put something faster out anytime soon.

one of the primary reason why dual GPU exist is for "fastest gpu on the planet" marketing bullet point. but for nvidia as long as they have the fastest gpu for a single card they will do just fine. so there is really no reason to make dual GPU. and in one of tom peterson interview with pcper he discussed about cost effectiveness of dual gpu and how it will struggle go against over single card solution over time. nvdia in general did not encourage board partner to make their own dual card solution. and recently there are more and more games using much more modern rendering method that did not play well with multi gpu tech itself.

I don't get how you can say that. AMD had the 7990, Nvidia had the 690. AMD had the 5970, Nvidia had the 590. I don't recall AMD having any more of them than Nvidia. In fact, Nvidia also had the Titan Z during the same time, giving them more, and the most recent one. Most likely because the 7990 was faster than Nvidia's 690.

Edit: I forgot about the 6990, which gives them the same number of mGPU's.

I guess the argument is I am not aware of AMD making any new AMD Radeon Pro's (forgot about that one, and is not a professional card btw), just as Nvidia doesn't make any more Titan Z's, but both exist and are still sold in limited locations. Both are also last generations tech.

Those are the past. The question is will they make ones for this gen.
