I am looking to upgrade my E6600 Core 2 Duo CPU. When I look online, I find the E8400 Core 2 Duo (one of the newer CPUs on the market) at around $220.00. I also find that the E6600 CPU that I have currently have retails for around $230.00.

Now why would the E8400 @ 3.0GHz be cheaper than the E6600 @ 2.4GHz? Am I missing something here?

E6600 has 65nm fab process while the E8400 has the 45nm ........that reduces the manufacturing costs and hence the cheaper retail prices.

Regarding your upgrade, i suggest you wait for a couple of weeks, prices are going to drop soon. E8400 should be avail for < $200

E6600 is now no longer in mass production while E8400 are now in mass production with newer technology and larger DIE size that reduce the manufacturing cost. As I know the reasonable price for E8400 is around USD$ 200 and this price would be happened when Q9550 and Q9450 are available in Market.

MSRP for the E8400 is $180. Currently it is in very high demand so supply is low. As a result, e-tailers have jacked up the prices. Basic Supply and demand economics. They jack up the prices because they know people are willing to pay it. I am waiting until this summer when the supply is higher and I can buy it for $180. Then again, if I wait long enough, I may be able to pick up one of the six core core 2 duo's.
