Hello,
i have a dual core e5700 cpu,its idle temperature is 75 degrees Celsius, and when there is just 50 % cpu usage the temperature jumps to 90s and 100 degrees C,this is the core 1 and cor2 temperature..i have a stock fan and its rotating at usual speed of around 3000rpm..please tell me whats the problem,as when the machine was new the temperatures were normal,at 100 % usage and hot room it was around 70 C...

thank you,i also thought it might be the same reason,as few months back,i removed the fan,and didnt know that i have to put the paste or the silver thing again, thought since its already there from before...since i have done that since months ago,and didnt bother about the temps,do u think the life of CPU might have reduced too much?...am scared,as its not been a year since i bought it...

Ouch... we can not guess how long it shortens your processors life operating at those extremely high temperature. I am surprised that the PC does not shutdown on you because processors are supposed to have protection mechanism that shuts the PC down when the temperature gets too high.

But like Brett said, clean up the old paste in your processor & put a fresh new layer. Watch some videos how to do it properly. There are a lot on Youtube.

OMG i cant believe this, just a small chemical costing a dollar helped everything...the temps r normal now, normal here means 40 deg C,and even ran the stress test and in one minute the temp increased just by 5 degrees, where as before it jumps to 100 directly...thanks a lot everyone, and thanks TomsHardware for providing a forum..:)
yahoooo,so happy now :) :)
