deadpccat :
Hi, im sure you get requests for build help. But im making a dual cpu pc and have no clue where to start, built a pc before so the building part is fine, i just cant decide / find out the best of what i need. This is what i have so far:
case -
NZXT Phantom 410 Midi Tower Chassis - Red
RAM -
Hyperx 8x2
MOBO - ???
CPU's - ???
Graphics card - ?? (2-300 pounds)
water cooling - ???
battery -
800w corsair
Hard drives, screens, etc - sorted
im a 3D animation student so i need quite a bit of power been looking at AMD processors.
Amd prosseors
and also MOBO (info from another toms hardware post)
MOBO1
MOBO2
thanks in advance for whatever help is given
deadpccat,
I think it's necessary to take a step back and consider the starting point before exact components. If you're having a system for animation, then yes, a dual CPU system has many advantages, the main one being the ability to have many cores / threads for rendering and effects processing. But, the number of cores needs to balanced by the speed of the CPU's for 3D modeling with a lot of textures as these are described by sometimes millions of polygons that need to be computationally repositioned.
If you are going to be using Autodesk- 3ds Max and Maya, and Adobe software I'd suggest a Xeon E5-2600 series> ECC RAM > Quadro combination. The ECC RAM is error correcting and this provides error-free, stable rendering, while the Quadro can run high anti-aliasing and the viewports in 3Ds and Maya.
The NZXT case is an interesting design, but can not accommodate a dual CPU motherboard which are at least E-ATX and often EEB size.
You didn't mention a budget, but in any event, the best cost / performance is going to be attained by buying recent, but depreciated parts. For this I'd suggest considering:
DELL PRECISION T7610 Barebone Workstation ! Build your own System !! > £224.23 or offer + £44 post
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DELL-PRECISION-T7610-Barebone...
T7610 "Barebones"______________ £280 (up to 4X GPU, 1300W PSU)
E5-2680 v2 _________________ £425 > 10 core / 20 thread @ 2.8 /3.6Ghz
16GB DDR3-1866 ECC___________ £90
Used Quadro K2200 (4GB)________ £200 ALT: Quadro K620 (2GB)

The E5-2680 v2 is 10 core / 20 thread @ 2.8 /3.6Ghz:

And in this way, you simply plug in the CPU, RAM, GPU, and drives without researching, ordering, assembling, and etc. The 2nd CPU and more RAM can be added later.
If the budget is stricter, you can consider a Dell Precision T7500, 2X Xeon X5690 (LGA1366)- 6-core @ 3.47 / 3.73GHz (and $1,600 new!), 48GB DDR3 1333 ECC RAM and possibly a used Quadro K4200. These have 1100W PSUs. The disks are 3GB/s but you can add a 6GB/s RAID controller- PERC or LSI. The Xeon X5600 series was really excellent andthe first two cores will run at 3.73GHz which is a modern speed. There are usually quite a few T7500's on ebay.de and sometimes you can buy a low specification one in good condition and change the CPU's.
Anyway, there are a couple of quick alternatives to building that would be highly expandable as projects increase in complexity and size- I think more appropriate to your use.
Cheers,
