Hello all-

I recently bought an EVGA GTX 1070 FTW which was an upgrade from an r7 260x. I was wondering if I can use both of them at the same time? If so, what all do I need to do?

Solution

Yes, you can use them to mine in the same system. You shouldn't need to do anything special, especially if you're using something like nicehash
You can't combine their power for gaming if that's what you're asking. Even if you could, a 1070 is so much more powerful than a 260X it probably wouldn't make much difference.

You can have both and run separate monitors on each if you were so inclined (games on the monitor(s) from the 1070, desktop applications from the 260X), but there wouldn't really be any point.

I was more asking from a crypto-mining standpoint... Would it still not work?

I seem to remember reading that you can use both AMD and NVidia gfx under Vulkan; never tested it though.

Mining is a mugs game these days though; the electric costs more than the coins mined; the only people "coining" it are mining farms in Russia and China, and new start-up coin con artists.

@CaptainCretin both Vulkan and DX12 support using disparate GPUs in tandem for gaming, but it has to be implemented on a game by game basis by the devs. I think ashes of the singularity is the only one that's actually done this so far, and I haven't heard of any developments since. Multi GPU in general seems to be on its way out.

Regarding mining, you can quite easily earn more than your electricity costs as an amateur miner as long as your rates are reasonable. Although with a 260X you'll be earning well less than a dollar per day regardless.

i'm not even sure the multi-gpu was even implemented in the final product of AoS. they demoed it like crazy early on but when it finally was released i don't recall hearing anything else about it. i'd have to look it up to even see if it made it to the finished product.

got everyone real excited though at the time but as you said, seems multi-gpu is on the way out. looks mainly due to dx12. when amd and nvidia were providing the drivers for sli/xfire, devs were happy to have it. but once they handed the reigns over to the devs to implement it, we VERY quickly saw any multi-gpu stuff die a quick death.
