Dual GTX 570 SLI, No sound?

I have an i5 on asus board, dual evga nvidea GTX 570 cards

realtek audio on board

tried its disabling via msconfig, have the absolute newest drivers, this is fresh install of everything windows also (7 )

- windows is great!
go to play a game, no audio anymore.
movies yes, not in games.

-using hdmi out to monitor
everything else is good, but I cannot get sound even after tinkering with all the normal places to enable or disable
sounds, msconfig, the nvidia control panel -have great sound in windows and for movies but nothing in games.

do i need a dedicated sound card and what one will not mess up the rest of the stuff I now wonder?

Is it every game you play or specific games? Some of the newer games give you the option to choose what audio source you want to play.
