Hello everyone,

Lightning struck my house a few months back and damaged nothing but my computer...lol

Now that Ive decided to build a new computer at about 900-1200 dollar price tag. I have assembled all of the parts I think I need..

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/CTf6CJ

There are some parts missing from the list because I will be taking my old zapped computer to a shop to see if my old visual drive, power supply, hard drive, and cpu can be reused.. (im guessing that many volts would burn a hole somewhere in the board before having a chance to reach the cpu) im also pretty sure it came in through my modem because that was shot too... monitor still works, comp turns on but black screen of nothing. If nothing else I will use my old case..

If my i5 3570k is shot, any reccomendations? Would a better processor affect games running more physics? Beamng, nextcargame, etc..

If you have any advice or past experiences with any of the parts listed, Please let me know - Im really interested whether the monitor I chose is worthwhile or not. Is 5ms response time that much? Would I be happier with 144hz and maybe less colors? Are the color clarity and contrast increases with my selected monitor worthwhile over a faster monitor?

http://m.newegg.com/Product/Details?itemnumber=24-113-032 was my last monitor... they seem the same except I pay 50 bucks more for that last 1.5"

If mine still works would it be comparable?

Thanks,
Sam

Hi Sam,

sorry to hear about the lighting that was bad luck, anyways....... if you are willing to invest and since you are kind of building a new pc anyway...... I would go for an I7 and maybe 16gb of RAM just to future proof.

I hope that helps,
Matt :)

Horrible luck lol.. my insurance deductible was like 1500 and the computer cost 1100...lmao

What would the benefits of an i7 be in terms of gaming? When i had switched from an i3 to my i5 I didnt notice much of a difference in games... would it be more noticeable with sli applications?

As for ram I was reading two articles that were stating theres only a 3% peak difference in fps on benchmarks using different hz of ram, and that the increased ram would only be used for background processes and that it wouldnt be used for the game.
Ive read vram is the version I want for gaming but damn.. it gets spemdy fast.

Heres the article

Your kind of right you would not notice a massive difference between an i5 and an i7 in game with the 2 GPU's........ but there would be a little diffrence in performance and in general the system will perform better and hopefully more efficient, it will multi task better and if you do any work on it, should speed up that kind of stuff with more ram and a better cpu, and as i mentioned before its just to future proof it. New stuff is coming out every day and in my opinion if you have the cash I would spend it. a build like this should last you 5+ years without needing an upgrade (i7 and more ram) and on another note you could put a skylark cpu in there which is also another bonus.

Mmk, Ill keep my eyes open for a good deal on an i7 then.

As for the monitor i was thinking the main difference between my old and potential new one would be the ratio on old is 5000: and new is 50million:1 it sounds like a huge difference, but is it?
-would the best bang for my buck maybe be spending more on a 1440p monitor with a higher refresh rate?

All I will say is find a nice monitor that you like as far as ratios go I suppose higher is always better, for refresh rates, anything below 5 is good ..... dont forget 5 milliseconds will happen too fast for the human eye to say "wow hang on a sec my mouse moved 5 milliseconds slower " so yer if i was buying a monitor and did not want to go over the top with price I would go for......

Just bought a brand new evga gtx 970 ssc acx 2.0

Im getting excited 😀

By the way, thanks for the help... and while i dont necessarily mean how fast i can track an object... I mean more of: at the way higher fps I should be getting, wouldnt there be a higher chance of screen tearing using the lower refresh rate? Furthermore would using sync to alleviate that reduce the apperance of the picture, opposed to instead refreshing so often its gauranteed to get multiple frames of the same image?

And go easy on me, lol Im somewhat new to building computers

Also, can I sli a gtx 970 ssc with an sc? Would I just have to increase the mhz on the 970sc to match the ssc? Do nothing?

Its no problem :) we all have so start some where, as far as refresh rates and stuff in this day and age any "gaming monitor" will work just fine and even older ones and no gaming monitors will work fine...... and whats ment by refresh rate is the delay in which your monitor displays whatever your computer has sent via the output.

So as example: you cause an explosion in some game, well in actual fact you will be seeing the explosion 5 milliseconds late, but as i said before you wont be able to see this due to it being so fast. Just as a tip over thinking the internals of a pc are great and always fun to do...... but as far as monitors go, all you need is whatever you want to display at HDMI or 4K then ofc you will need a hdmi or displayport for that and a 5ms refresh rate. Monitors are pretty simple :)

Let me know if there is anything else you need
Matt :)

Sweet! I updated one last bit on my previous question. Im also wondering how accurate pc part picker is with compatability?

And should I buy another cooler for my cards with the current layout on the motherboard? If theyre back to back wont one be hotter?

And should I buy a hdmi cord? Theyre on sale 25 ft for 5 bucks.. im pretty sure thats what ill be using. But not 100% the specs on ppp dont list for the asrock z77 what the connection is.

I should have all the parts by sun or mon... and then ill pick best answer its not a contest tho, ..just sayin.

well I personally have never used PC Part picker...... you don't really need to, when your buying your mother board all you really need to be careful on is the socket that the cpu is.... and what the board can take in ram eg DDR3, DDR4. and ofc you will be running 2 graphics cards so you need to make sure your board has 2 pci-e connectors for them....... as far as everything else goes any modern board should be fine. As far as your hdmi goes....... dont get mixed up you wont be running your hdmi from your board, you will plug it into one of the graphics cards, but sure if they are cheap get one :)

you are lucky that you are in the US..... everything is so much more expensive in the UK 🙁

Matt. Youve been an awesome help. Better than any other forum ive been on, or person ive spoken to. Seriously, thanks man.
Heres the final build, i decided to take your advice on both things. Ram and cpu wise...Not because im on the D, but because it really did end up being the right way to go..

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/nMBfqs

I have not yet ordered the second 970, m9i, the power supply, or case.

M9i is like 35 bucks(shipping) plus its going to be here later than the rest of my parts if i go thru amzn.. so im trying to research if its really worth it

Power supply would be late and I think my local shop has one for the same price.

And i want to purchase the case in person to make sure its all hunkie-dory

Dude look at austrailia... it was so crazy on ebay for about 3 minutes (forever in google time)I looked into becoming a vendor

Slots: 1x PCI-Express 3.0 x16 Slots, 1x PCI-Express 3.0 x8, 1x PCI-Express 3.0 x4, 2x PCI-Express 3.0 x1, 2x PCI Slots

Are what the mobo offers. Is that sufficient?

Also idk if you can pm... but if theres something that would be loads cheaper i gaurantee that paypal could facilitate me purchasing it then selling it to you. Ive personally never dealt with forum based purchases but know a lot of guys on car forums turbobricks, yellowbullet, etc... who make their living on it..

To sum it up- im endebted for your help, lol thanks agai
Something to consider.

Decided to be safe and go with asus z170 pro gaming atx... i didnt want to before because newegg reviews were bad, but ive realized newegg is a total scam site and it was probably due to their poor shipping and handling as well as choice of vendor..

Btw its 30 bucks cheaper in uk for the same mobo 😉

One final question. Ive decided to go with a 144hz monitor. Whats the best bang for my buck. I really think my final build can handle it easily. Possibly 1440 as well
