Dual GTX 970 sli or single 980

hi there

I have a triple monitor gaming setup consisting of

i7 4820K
px79 motherboard
EVGA supernova 1000W
16gb corsair vengeance ram
Corsair 750D
2x250gb SSD
2tb HDD
H100I
and a GTX 660ti

i wish to upgrade my 660ti to a 980 but was wondering if dual 970's would be a better option for my triple monitor gaming setup

dual 970s will destroy the 980 in performance
if you get 1 980 now, you can get another later to sli
pick your poison, better performance now, but less upgrade-ability or less performance now, for more upgrade-ability?

The 970 SLI will smash everything against the 980, while only costing $150.00 (US) more.
