dual monitors with 144 hz

So I used to have the Radeon 7850 and with it, I used the Asus VG248QE. I used the dual link dvi cable for it so that I could use 144 hz. I also have a second old crt type monitor but when I tried to use a dvi to vga converter, it wouldn't work. I could only use both monitors if I didn't use the 144 hz. I now have a gtx 960 and am purchasing an hdmi to vga converter for my second monitor. I still use the dual link Dvi chord so I can use the 144 hz. Would i be able to have the 144 hz and use a second monitor with the use of the converter or would it not work? Sorry this is so long I'm new to this website, thanks in advance.

The second monitor will be limited to its own refresh rate so if it is 60hz then 60 fps
