Dual Monitors

Okay, basically I have an Acer 5742 aspire laptop with a vga and hdmi output. The "graphics card"(not technically a graphic card) is the Intel HD graphics. I want to use both the vga and the hdmi output to connect the two monitors i have. Now the problem is that if I plug them in i can only view EITHER the vga OR the hdmi. So I bought a vga splitter but that just duplicates, and even if i choose extend desktop on windows 7 it just extends to one of them and then duplicates it to the other. So i cannot get what i really want - two monitors extending my laptop "desktop". Can someone help me with this , thanks.
