now wait a minute.... dual 7800GTX in PCIE 16X paired with intel for gaming?! are these guys nuts??? if this is ture then by god i hope amd win the damned lawsuit and we get cheap AMD FXs by dell with dual PCIE16X.....


or have i fallen into one of intel and dell's marketing scheme because PCIE 16X won't help much?

Yeah, exreteme tech benchmarked the Dell Dual 16X Sli vs FX-57 standard SLI(8X). The Amd machine wooped Dells(Intels) butt hands down. Interesting sutff!

Its sure that Dual 16X wont bring much if any over 8X as 8X is already twice as fast as agp8X, I seriously doubt it will be a bottle neck for some time to come!

My guess that a FX-57 with Dual 16X PCI-E board would only do a little better than the current 8X Pci-E. 8X Agp wasn't even throttling video cards so super fast bus speed at this point is a waste. I'm sure they'll have a good ole marketing scheme saying how 16X is way cooler than 8X and how you should buy it. I'll just sit back and watch the dumb sheep buy it. I'm sure down the line a full 16X bandwidth may be reached but we are a long way off from that right now.

i thought that a PCIE vid card could handle about 40 GB/sec transfer? as in one article it said that current vid cards could make about 40 GB/sec transfer and that PCIE 16 was only 8GB/sec max... someone correct me? i try and find the article

My guess is we'll need at least 2 more generation to completely saturate the PCIe16X...(just a guess).

As of right now no video card even comes close to the full 16x PCI bandwidth. Granted I don’t have any numbers or links to back my statement up but there is one thing I can mention. Take a video card like the 6800GT AGP and the PCI-E variant. When the clock speeds are set the same the performance difference is negligible between the two cards even though the bandwidth is twice as high. (AGP is 2 GB/s and PCIE 4 GB/s one direction, while Bi-Directional is 8GB/s for PCI-E) . A normal Sli system is at 8X which is still fast enough for the current generation of cards. Who knows how long it will be until a full 16X speed can be attained by a video card

Agp allows Bi-Directional transfers but its in half-duplex mode. Check out the link below, it will make things clearer I think.

Ya, but that's from the card to the cpu. 266MB is more than enough for VIVO.
Even the 7800 cards dont need anywhere near 2.1 GB/sec. unless we are talking Sli totals.

Yeh but what about transferring textures back to main memory, at some point they are gonna need to swap textures. 128-256Meg can only hold so much and those large texture files have to go back sum where.

Yeh but at some point these textures are gonna need to be discarded back to main mem or swap file (the graphics card can only hold so much. Surly if its a large texture and the bus is only half duplex then this is gonna take a lot of the bus's time.

DELL + Gaming Machine = 1 big Laugh. Unless that DELL comes with water cooling then WTF are they thinking going Intel for gaming.

PS. We all know why Dell chose Intel so god bless the hopelessly inept that chose this system.

Well, the last time I checked, a 512 meg card had like five hundred and twelve megs of memory. Not that the newest cards can use that much, but still, it is there for when cards do get fast enough to make use of it. Any system memory that does get used, is done by the cpu, not the gpu, so the upstream bandwidth just isn't needed.

No, PCIe x8 is slower than AGP 8x. The big numbers you hear are because it's full-duplex, so it's capable of that same rate in both directions simultaniously.

PCIe x1 is ~250MB/s, both ways, so you'll hear 500 even though for devices like video cards it isn't. AGP 1x is 266MB/s and has all those cute AGP features.

Oh thanks for clarifying that! I knew these where full-duplex numbers, but I still beleived it was faster downstream and upstream.

Yes, it's 2 gigabits in each direction per lane, which is ALMOST twice as fast in each direction as PCI is in one direction. AGP is 2x PCI, per "x".

PCI-X right now because of card availability. PCI-X over x1 in the near future because of 133MHz/64-bit roughly equivelent to x4.

For the future? As cards become available, x1 and x4 of course.

x8 is rediculous for anything but graphics. All the x8 cards I've seen would work just as well on x4.
