I have 2 r9 290's and want 3x 4k monitors. However my problem is, the 290 (can only use the top card ports, crossfire and all) only has 1x DP and 1x HDMI. I'm using both right now for my 2 samsung 4k's but would like to add a third. Options?

Assuming your card supports DisplayPort's multi-stream transport feature, you could buy a DisplayPort hub and plug them into that. You are correct that you can only plug monitors into the master card in a Crossfire setup.

hmmm...well I can run anything fine (60fps) at 8k with eyefinity, the only problem is the crosshair is in the middle of the bezel obviously. So i'm thinking that 12K at will run just fine

I see what you mean now, sorry for the previous too quick reply. There is no solution other than what was suggested before, a mst compatible hub. I think however 4k is not possible on a hub since you are limited still by a single DP bandwidth.
I think your best bet will be then to get another card that has more ports available and use it as the primary card.

Sorry but that is incorrect. but I don't wish to argue. As your image is a 4k pic, im hoping you can help me solve this issue. 8k is 7680 x 4320 btw. Regardless how many monitors is takes to get to that. I am of course talking about using eyefinity.

The only solution is to wait for better GPUs, unless someone from somewhere just somehow slap on a GPU that's like $5000 to be able to run 3x 4k monitors.

it would be nice. Just a shame that the vid cards only come with 1x hdmi and 1x dp. maybe ill get 2 gtx 780's instead. Qubits: HDMI 2.0 allows 60hz at 4k, which is what im using

Why not get 295x2 since it is the best GPU for 4k, and if you play BF4, AMD GPUs would be best for it.

official 8k resolution is 7680 x 4320. However some call simply adding a 2nd 4k monitor an 8k setup, which is not technically correct.
In theory adding a 2nd or more monitors should increase level of detail, as it doubles the amount of horizontal pixels. This is usually not exactly true due to the fact that most games simply upscale to 4k or higher resolutions, adding nothing to level of detail.

that could be an option.. the nvidia tech in the video says you can use whatever card you want to port into and says how to control the temps by doing so
