I read a lot of stuff about the 3.5gb with gtx 970. So I'm wanting to know how will the r9 290x do with games like Arma 3 bf4 far cry 3 etc.. Vs a gtx 980 I realy don't wanna get a 970

Solution
If you are talking about 2 x r9 290x(xfire) then it will be a fair bit faster Than the GTX980 in games that run good with crossfire. For all the others the GTX980 will be better. Keep in mind that you will need a 850w or higher power supply for 2 x r9 290x. A 550-650w quality unit would be fine for the GTX980.

Here are some benchmarks with both included: http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/gigabyte-geforce-gtx-980-g1-gaming-review,12.html The r9 295 is the same as 2 x r9 290x just so you know.

PS: xfire and SLI are broken in FC3 and FC4. It works for single player, but will crash at the end of every multiplayer match. It has been a known bug since FC3's release and nothing has been done to fix it at all. It's not a driver...

Two 290X is obviously going to be better than the 980 in crossfire enabled games but if you're talking single, then I would say it depends on the resolution. I believe in 1080p you're looking at a marginal difference of 10-15%, which is also explained by the price. At QHD the gap probably narrowed to 7.5-10% and 2.5-5% on 4K. What I like from Maxwell however is the Power consumption/Efficiency, as it is really really good.

At the end of the day the 290X is a hell of a card, going head to head with a 980 in single GPU battle it wil lose but not by that much. If you meant "Duel" =(fighting against) then thats the answer...

If you meant "Dual" = (as in 2 of them), then obviously the 290x CFX will win hands down...

Of course, a R9 290x in crossfire will beat the single GTX 980 by a long shot. So you don't really need to upgrade unless you have the stock coolers. Which I guess you can just change the stock blower style coolers to an aftermarket one. But there's no necessary "upgrade" that needs to be done here.
