Hey Tomshardware! Going to use these cpu´s for gaming, that is the only goal. Aiming to play all of the recent AAA titles such as StarWars battlefront and rainbow six siege at ultra settings 1080p 60+fps Everything will be bought second hand, most likely from ebay.de (even tho I live in Finland)
there is no limit on the budget, altough what I am looking for here is the best VALUE possible.
So my top candinates at the moment are 2x Xeon x5450´s, this is because I can find them for 20(ish) euros on ebay.de (and they seem to be good enough for even the newest games?

Solution
TBH, with stuff like this, it is hard to tell, for example, which Motherboard is best, I would just take one that will work and by parts around it. An SSD would be good, and there are some AMAZING deals on Sandisk ones this black Friday Weekend! 290/780 sure, Linus used a 980 to show that It wouldn't be a significant bottleneck.

Right PSU, TBH I have no idea, ill need to look into it. One point to note, each Xeon takes 120W, double ish that of Linus' ones!
Sounds like a LTT video 😛
But yeah, since I came across this, I kinda want to do one also.
on ebay.de, after a look around it looks like the 5450's are about the best for the money.

So, everything including RAM, GPU, etc, you want to buy second hand?

Also have you found a motherboard?

Yep, I will buy everything 2nd hand although I am unsure about the HDD, but that doesn´t matter all that much. Haven´t found a mobo yet, and I am a bit lost on which one would be fitting.

But at least according to tom´s hardwares CPU Gaming tier list it is on the same tier as the AMD 8370E or i7-950, both of which seem to be just fine for today´s games.
(x5450=QX9650)

I am planning on getting two Xeons, because they are so cheap, and they look like they have incredibly good price/performance, especially if they have enough power to play games such as battlefront. Also, I don´t know which modern CPU I could get for ~40€.

It will be used as kind of a temporary system, so that I can get rid of my current PC while it is still worth something. Then later I´d be able to buy a new PC when we get new parts with HBM2 and such.
EDIT: Also you are right, it´s also a fun little project :)

I have a feeling that it may run better than you think. I assume that the inspiration for trying this came from the Linus Tech Tips VIdeo on it. Where he used something similar, but with slightly lower end Xeons than the ones picked ( He picked L5420's )

The outcome was actually pretty good, with one example of a benchmark being Starwars battlefront running @1080p highest settings with around 75 FPS

Linus used a Q6600 on his scrapyard wars builds, in both seasons 1 and 3, and did fine in games such as tomb raider 2013, and let´s not forget that this Xeon is better than that, and I´d have two of them :). Are you sure that this wouldn´t do? Also I´m open to suggestions.

Thanks for the link :)
Although I think I want to look for an auction instead of a buy now --> better price? I am not sure tho.
Can you tell me what I should look for when picking a mobo for Xeons, I´m a bit lost. (Same with RAM)

So basically what you are saying is that 2x 5450´s is going to be just fine ?

For the boards, just ebay dual 771 socket board. Find one, and google it to find its manual. There is will show a list of supported CPU's and RAM, on top of other information about the board. Not quite the same as searching up z97 xD

Oh yeah, the other issue that he pointed out was that they are not standard size board, therefore do not fit in standard cases, so you have a work-around for this?

And yeah, they look fine. Should work pretty well!

Yeah I don´t really care, it can be T-shaped for all I care, I want to get into case modding anyways 😀

So what would be the best setup to get? Which PSU should I get, and as for graphics card would a 290 or a 780 be a good choice? I am not sure whether or not the mobo will bottleneck them. And how bad/good idea would a SSD be in this system, alongside a HDD of course :)

Yep, this is what I wanted to hear, hehe. Linus´s CPU's take less because he used the more power efficiency orientated CPUs. Like L or E series.
EDIT: Also don´t forget to tell me what you have found out after you do your research on the PSU´s 😛

Soooo, Patented Austin dual PSU solution? Also, how bad of a bottleneck is an 8x PCI-E slot?
