Hello all! This is my first time posting to the Tom's forums. Be gentle.
So I am in the process of piecing together a whitebox FreeNAS build and I'm running into a bit of a conundrum. I was 'gifted' 2x Intel Xeon E5-2640 v2's (8-core 2.0GHz) by the powers that be and was thinking about incorporating them into the build. Let me say the purpose/use of the NAS is to host VM's for 4x ESXi 5.5 hosts and a Plex library. I realize that Plex won't be hitting the NAS very hard, but I would think iSCSI MPIO (x4 ports) would be.
Are these CPU's going to fit the bill? Or should I look at selling them and picking up a single, higher clockspeed CPU and going the single-proc route?
Storage is configured as such:
2x Intel DC 3700 SSD's (striped) - VM OS's Datastore (connected via iSCSI)
5x Lenovo SSD's (raidz1) - VM App Datastore (connected via iSCSI)
6x WD RE 2TB HDD's (raidz1) - Media Datastore (connected via NFS)
The iSCSI will be using MPIO over 2-4 1gb ethernet connections, NFS just 1gb ethernet.
Please, let me know what you think! I'll try to monitor the thread pretty closely so that I can respond to people quickly if they have additional questions for me. Thank you!
update: included storage config
