Duel etiquette

I dueled for the first time last night.
I lost the first fight, but then i switched from my MF gear to my
combat one and won the next 5 duels.
After his last defeat, my opponent called me a cheater (and other
unfriendly names) because i was drinking purple potions while fighting
!
Since he never stated as a rule that rejuv were not allowed, i wonder
if it is an "unwritten law" that duelers are suppose to know..... or
was he simply a bad looser ?
Thanks for any infos

It is considered extremely bad etiquette to drink potions while
dueling. The first time I duelled I made the same mistake, so don't
feel too bad. From now on though, try to avoid those pots.

Of course, you can (and should) do whatever it takes to stay alive
during a PK situation. Potion rules only apply to mutual duels.

I have been told that myself so it could be. Wonder if there is a dueling
FAQ?

Strangely enough, the one single thing most P.v.P contestants will usually
agree on is on not drinking Rejuv potions during a match. They will cheat
and lie in regards to every other single aspect of Player vs. Player, but
not about pots. Go figure. Still, I never take anything for granted in PvP
and unless someone says "no pots" before starting, every technique not
involving 3rd party add-ons seems fair game to me.

I was accused of using Cleglaw's once. I laughed and admitted readily that
I was in fact using them. I asked them to remove their armor and I would
remove my gloves. They didn't agree to that.

Anex....Explodeazon, Irony, thy name is PvP.

From what I've seen most people outlaw Potion Drinking and Cleglaws gloves,
and just about anything else with "slows target". It tends to cause some
bad desync to some folks, on top of being rather annoying if you're the
victim :)

Well, you are kind of unanimous.... Thanks for the enlightment!
So, if my opponent, indeed, did not drink any potion, i have to admit
that his clvl 91 Pally was stronger then my clvl 95 one...;(
Those Barb's singing from his Call to Arm must have helped him... he
was also wearing Exile (more then 1k def)and Rends (He did not showned
the rest of his gear..). He was hurting me like crazy and i dont think
i would have won many matchs without drinking pots !
Well, humility lesson i guess....(i must admit that i was proud of my
victories...too bad!)

And if you're a Necromancer, you're not allowed to use curses, minions,
poison, or any of the bone spells (and no throwing weapons, either).

It is generally considered BM (bad manners) to pot in duels. Point being
that unless killed outright in one hit, anyone can use four rows of full
rejuvs and survive without any duelling skills whatsoever, at least for some
time, maybe even long enough to crawl back to town and hide.

The point of duelling is to try out your build and skills against the other
guys same. In public duelling, however, there aren´t really any agreed upon
rules. There are also a lot of 1337 H4xx0r55 with duped, e-bayed, bugged and
other cheating/looser gear, remember EVERYONE has an Enigma armor - as You
know they´re more common than Isenhardt´s Cases these days. As well as a lot
of bad losers calling You a 1337 H4xx0r55 - So good luck there.

Try finding a group of real duellers out there and learn from them.

Cheers

as a retired Grandmaster on the dueling ladder on Nightshivers yrs. ago,
the rules for dueling are: no pots!
on bnet, the same albeit unwritten rule rule applies, no pots or slow. but
you always run into the guy with some item with slow on it...the true
"duelers" dont use poison either.

Maybe it's my noobishness coming out, but if I was called "1337 H4xx0r55"
should I ge insulted? Or should I laugh at the lack of typing and english
skills?

If you are really interested in dueling you could ask Shiflet from
next door (agd) for advice, he seems to be a very active dueler and
has described several dueling incidents.

Heh - it depends on the circumstances I guess. I almost broke my fingers
typing that leetspeak lingo thingy. I always take pride in being called a
noob or haxxorz by guys more than 30 years younger than me (I´m 44) - who
weren´t out of kindergarden when D1 was released 😱)

Oh - I forgot to mention that CtA weapons are also more common than
Griswolds edge nowadays. I guess that Ber - Jah - Ohm and those high end
runes must be raining down somewhere ;o)

Sorceress can be the sneakiest potters because its easy to
hide under EnergyShield and fast Teleporting.Talking of ES
I only found out recently that mana pots are not allowed
or at least some people think so but i dont see the point
since its very hard to tell.

in 1.09, so-called true duellers followed a heavy number of written rules,
which were designed to balance all classes; no guided arrow, for example,
no eth runes, no slow, no cold mastery, no absorb gear, sorceresses,
amazons and necromancers were limited to 10% damage reduction gear,
barbarians and other melee'ers were limited to 50%, no more than 60%
faster run/walk, the whirlwind skill was banned, smite was banned, no more
than 60% faster cast rate for teleports, no use of any knockback skill
whatsoever, etc...

...and of course, no potions.

I found those rules very boring. I was a rather active public dueller at
that time, and my goal was to build anti-hackers characters. Sadly enough,
the eth bug, hexing charms, wizardgloves and occy rings ruined my
ith-hunter carreer. Bah. It was fun while it lasted, being called a hacker
because I switch auras depending on the opponent 😉 salvation/charge when
duelling a sorceress, or cleansing/charge against a bowazon, or
defiance/smite against a WWbarb or fury druid...

I have never been very interested in dueling, but it seems to me that
dueling would be the same as fighting in life. In that case you would use
whatever skills you have. If the other person does not feel it is a fair
match the he/she has the option of not dueling. Is this not a reasonable
opinion?
