First of all, if you want to get some levels quick, just hang around at the
ruins or by the two huts further into the woods. Most enemies can't get at you
there apart from bats and the very occasional wolf. Quick, threat free XP.
Best monsters are Scorpions, Wolves and Giant Spiders.
It doesn't seem to matter which class you pick as you can go anyway you like
although you do get bonuses for your class skills but it doesn't lock you in
like some other games.
For weapon skills, don't bother getting either Heavy Pole or Medium side
weapons or throwing weapons. There is a Medium Side weapon, an Axe, but it
does the same damage as the Goblin weapon and is a light weapons so stick with
that if you want to dual wield. If you want to use Heavy Weapons there is a
Great Sword in the Theatre but it is right at the end so there is a little
point other than for kicks.
For armour, there is nothing better than Medium. Some of the chests seem to
have random contents as one time through I found a set of Heavy Chain and
another time through it wasn't there. Or I missed it. Same for Shields,
nothing better than Medium.
For those kung fu types, Ninjitsu works really well. I got this up to level 6
before I entered the sewers and could kill Goblins with one flying kick. Fun
to watch too, especially if you use the Time Crystal. And all the points you
save on weapons you can stick into Dexterity and Agility instead. Makes all
the difference.
Don't bother with Lockpicking at all. You won't need it. Get Disarm up to 4
only if you want to get the last few chests in the game, one of which has the
Great Sword. Take Inspect to 3. One level below a traps difficulty and you can
still see the devices to disarm.
As far as Magic is concerned I have found that you can run out quite quickly.
Arcane is a pain as you you cast away until you run out of books and that's it
unless some of the critters you kill drop some. Same for Nether, once you run
out of ingredients you can't make any more spells. Celestial and Rune magic
use your mana supply so are more useful. I think a Fighter/Adept type would
work better than a Fighter/Mage.
