I have footage that was shot on a dvcam deck (with mini dv tape). I'm
ready to edit in FCP and I'm looking for advice. I'm running FCP 4 on
a G4 laptop with a La Cie external 120 gig drive.

-Does it matter what dvcam deck I rent to input into my computer?
-Are their any special input settings I should aware of?
-When I'm ready to output will I lose much quality if I output to mini
dv (not dvcam)?

thank you for responding. I am grateful for any knowledge you can
share about DVCAM as I've never worked with it before.

best,
michelle Handelman

Unless there is something strange about FCP, the answer to
both of those questions is most likely "no".

As long as you protect the physical/magnetic integrity of the
tape(s), the difference is microscopic to nonexistent.

DVCAM is essentially DV at a faster tape speed (to make the
recording more reliable). There are some other differences
(such as "locked" audio sync, etc.) that will likely make no
discernable difference to your activities. I use DV and DVCAM
interchangeably both at home and at the office.

No, the worst deck I've ever seen was perfectly adequate for broadcast
(though more expensive than a Betacam SP machine).

Yeah, I've had problems with audio. I have to capture the tape audio in
48khz or it stuffs up.

No. Just make sure you have contingency plans should the tape lose its
signal when you accidentally stick it on a magnet, etc.

As a longtime FCP, TiBook (and) DVCAM user I can confim that the answer is
absolutely NO.

DVCAM *is* DV for all practical purposes. (25Mbps digital video conforming
to the same standards)
The stuff that's technically different (locked audio, track pitch, etc)
has NO effect on the actual digital video stream coming into or going out
of the camera. DVCAM and DV (and DVCPro25 for that matter) are all
functionally IDENTICAL digital video signals.

Just use the FCP default settings (DV video 48Khz audio) and you'll be fine.

None at all. See the paragraph above.
