My son is getting into video editing.

Our main box does not have a DVD burner.

I want to buy a DVD DL writer. Are they
pretty much generic, or is there a "best"
brand?

I will probably buy it at egghead.

Thanks in advance,

The brand is not that big of a deal. One thing i purchased an external
case and put my own dvd burner in it it uses usb 2.0 or Firewire since
it is external I don't have to reach down to burn a cd or dvd and even
though it is not the fastest I find myslef using it the most . buying
an external case and a drive is not that m uch more than an internal
one cna can be easier on the install depening on your computer. if he
is doing video editing good chance he already has a firewire card.

External cases run about 30m bucks or less

I would check the "Best of" list at pcworld.com before deciding which to
buy. They're not gospel, but will give you a pretty good overview of the
field & prices.

Are they still in business? ;)

<tip of the hat to The Simpsons here>

Plextor or Sony are the best drives...HP is acceptable if you find it at a
good price.

Is that 30 million bucks...wow! I dont think my wife would let me spend
that much on an external case. She usually frowns on any over $50.

30 milli-bucks would be great, I can afford 0.030 dollars no problem.

In my opinion, the best DVD Burner (dual format/dual layer) is the
ND-3540A. I have an ND-3500 and an ND-3520. My dad has a 3520. I have
6 friends at work who have 3500's, 3520's and a 3540. Everybody is
100% satisfied with the performance of this drive.

Now, price is the best part. The drive is less than $40 from newegg;
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=Go&DEPA=0&type=&description=NEC+3540&Category=0&minPrice=&maxPrice=&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

Seriously, the drive is quiet, performs great and has never burned a
coaster for me. I have used Fuji, Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden media. In
my minds, the 8X DVD-R Taiyo Yuden from www.rima.com is the best media
out there for these NEC drives.

I hope this information has helped you in some way. I stand firmly
behind the quality of this drive. It's great. You won't regret
purchasing it.
