DVD Burner or Time to get BD burner

Was curious if the DVD burners are a thing of the past as I see BD burners dropping in price. Any difference in load/seek times if playing from a disc? Does the Blu Ray drive speed things up? Is M-disc going to become the new standard or a simple gimmick.

Hi

I have a Blueray burner....used it to full capacity precisely ONCE to back up ...24 gb...

The rest of the time I just use dvds...

No difference in speeds...apart from the fact it took FOREVER to write 24 gb...lol...well over an hour...

Realize Blu-Ray is just a storage format that holds more info than a DVD. Other than that, there aren't many differences.

Unless you actually use Bluray discs, buying a drive is useless.

It depends if you plan on backing up data on Blu-Ray blank media. Verbatim single layer 25GB BR discs costs $24 for a spindle of 20 which actually is not bad at $1.20 per disc.

However, Verbatim dual layer 50GB BR discs are very expensive. At $85 for a spindle of 10, that works out to $8.50 per disc.

If you have that much data that you want to backup then buying a BR burner would be worth it.

It will eventually become industry standard simply because of the storage space, however it won't record data any faster, and unless you have a ton of data to back up or you want to watch blu-ray movies from you computer it doesn't make a lot of sense at this moment in time IMO.

If you have no immediate use for it, I would just get a DVD drive, and like everyone else said, wait for them to become standard in computers. (Around when the price hits $30-40.)

Got it thank you! No, I rarely will burn data. I perhaps do it once or twice a year (burn some music or a powerpoint lesson plan). My system is a gaming system so I keep no important data on it. If I buy a new HDD or something fails; eh, I just reload the game. I thought BD players perhaps lower seek/load times. Wishful thinking ay???
