DVD drive for Inspiron 8200

After receiving 7 devices from Dell none of which work with my I8200, I am
beyond discouraged. I wanted to order a new Dell laptop by Nov 29 to have it
ready for a trip, but this now appears out of reach.

Corey, who moderates the CD/DVD part of Dell's Inspiron forum told me I need
either part 0X842 or 3U362. However, when I give Dell reps -- either by
email or by phone -- they tell me these parts numbers will not work. One
said those DVD drives were modular and I need an internal device.

original DVD drives (always on top) to the last three sent to me by Dell.
They are model GDR-8082N. The replacement looks very similar but does not
work. I took both of them to CompUSA and when they removed the external
plate (from the original) that allows one to open the tray, they said it
would not fit the slots on the replacement DVD drive.

So what do I do now? Do I need to send the entire notebook to Dell and let
them sort it out? Another agent is sending me DVD drive #8, but I have no
reason to believe that it will actually work.

Also, this whole experience is making me wonder about getting another Dell
if I can't even replace a DVD-ROM drive in a 2 year old laptop.

7 defective drives? I doubt - maybe there is a problem somewhere else?
Have you had a technician to replace them, or did you do it your self?
What is the problem more specific?

The drives were not defective, they simply were not the correct ones for my
laptop much like the last three identical units that were close to the
original but will not work.

I have no problem replacing these kinds of drives, but had it looked at by
the IT department at my office and CompUSA to make sure I was not wrong.

My problem is finding someone at Dell who can find a DVD-ROM drive that will
simply work with the i8200. I don't understand why Dell finds this such a
challenge.

but mine goes through the left side. Are these terms "front" and "side"
being used loosely or literally?

This looks like the one you need

assuming you need the drive on the side. That's the fixed drive.

If you need the one for the front, that would be the other one which is
for the modular bay. The drive itself might be the same, but the carrier is
different. It is designed to allow you to swap it out for a floppy drive,
extra battery, modular hard drive for s econd hard drive or whatever.

Dell should be sending you one that pops in after taking out one screw.
Mind you, they were never able to provide me with a correct bezel, but so it
goes...

Correct, my DVD drive goes into the left side. Is that was "fixed" means
here as opposed to "modular" being one that goes in through the front where,
in my case, there is an internal floppy drive?

Many Latitudes and Inspirons are the same except for some external trim
and the presence of a few extra buttons for volume or CD controls. The
drives and carriers for the Inspiron 8000, 8100 and 8200 are the same as for
the Latitude C800, C810 and C840.

Yes indeed, the drive mounted on the left side of the computer is the
fixed drive. The drive on the front is the modular bay one. If you use XP or
Win 2000, you should see a small icon in the tray on the right side. If you
click it, it will give you the list of removable items in the computer. You
can click on the floppy drive and it will then give you a flag saying you
can remove it. You could then pop in a different drive, a battery or if you
got one with the computer, a plastic cover to hide the hole.

If you look at the original one, you'll se a barcode label somewhere.
Call Dell and tell them he sparepartnumber, DP/Nxxxx
