DVD Drive (from xbox) wont power on

Hello, my xbox dvd drive won't power on. I have removed it from the xbox to see if I can fix it myself, but I don't know where to start. Buying a new one is not an option as the dvd drive has a "key" that corresponds to the "key" in the motherboard. Without this key the xbox won't read any disc. My question is how can I, not knowledgeable in this field, fix this dvd drive. Anything will be helpful! I live in Bronx, NY just in case there is some local repair store or person that can help me. Thank You for at least reading this.

so did the drive just quit working one day? and it will not open or anything?

if that is the case, you may be out of luck. if the board of the drive gets no power to so anything the only option would be to get someone with a willam programming board (or similar), desolder the main chip with the key on it and then flash a new drive with the key.

a lot of work and im guessing if anyone is willing to do it they will charge more than you are willing to pay.

i have a william programming board but missing the piece to do the reading. the piece alone costs as much as the whole board and kit, figures.

are all the connections for the power connector look fine? no burn marks or wires pulled off? also when the drive is plugged in to the console when you turn it on does the middle light keep flashing?

The drive did stop working after my cousin accidently dropped by about 2 inches, the drive not the Xbox. It won't do anything when it’s connected. It's completely idle. I see no burn marks and all the wires and cables are intact with no visible damage.

When I do connect the drive to the Xbox the middle light does flash continuously. I have put the driver in another Xbox and then its middle light also started flashing. Then to be 100% sure I put a working drive in the Xbox and the light did not flash. I would've used this drive but unfortunately it does not have the key that corresponds with the motherboard.

It does sounds like I am out of luck like you said but my only option is to fix this drive somehow and I'm determined to fix it no matter what.

Just to update you, I took the dvd drive, along with the xbox, to a repair shop called 1800fix. They did a great job in fixing it. They took out the chip from the messed up dvd drive and transplanted it into a brand new dvd drive of the same type. Now the xbox works like new. They said they used a $40,000 machine to do the job.

Thanks for your help at least. Now i can sleep easy now that i fixed my friends xbox that I messed up.

haha, no problem, i figured that was the issue.

good thing you have someone around you with a reflow machine to do the work. I would have had one hell of a time ever trying to do this with my soldering iron, probably be a couple day job.

i still need to repair a drive from a xbox i own with the same issue, was trying to mod it with some trace cuts and mod chip, which failed horribly and fried the board.

maybe i should get that done since i can resell my other xbox and keep the newer one
