DVD drive refuses to be recognized by Windows 8.

It has worked before in the past, and I've only had this thing for a little less than a year.

It seems like it does still work but it just isn't recognized by Windows 8 for some reason. Whenever I uninstall and reboot, I hear the DVD drive making noise like it's working but when I go to device manager, I get this:

My DVD drive is an Asus DRW-24B1ST, as you can see from the picture. If anyone can help me then that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

can you boot from a bootable CD or DVD (eg Win 8 DVD) if so you probably have a software problem
probably registry related
see fix from Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

If not you have a hardware problem
including loose power or data cables
check with both a CD and DVD as they use separate lasers to read the disks
