DVD Drive Wont read/Write

I have searched thru the forums I was unable to locate any topic that solved my issue. Some seemed close but no go. So if I have missed the correct post please direct me to it.

The drive in question is the SATA ASUS DRW-24B1ST a-49 manufactured Nov 2010. I have tried a second DVD drive also with same results.

Neither drive will read or write. They both show up in device manager but when a disk is put in it will click and light will blink then will eject the disk saying please insert a disk into drive. I have tried the upper and lower filter in the registry. Uninstalled the drive then reinstall. Set boot order to dvd drive first in system settings. Disabled all boot options in system settings except DVD drive. I have changed out hard drives with no OS installed and still will not boot from either DVD drive. My windows 8 trial version expires in 11 days. If I am unable to resolve this by thin I am dead in the water. I have been able to install other software as long as it is located on a hard drive.

Not sure this will help but it may be worth trying. Have you tried a different data cable or tried plugging the existing data cable into another SATA connector on the motherboard?

Yes I tried that also. Used different cables in different connectors. Also tried different power connectors, Like that would really make a difference. Also removed all current hard drives and replaced with a NTFS formatted one with no files or OS on it, totally empty. Then tried to boot from DVD drive with the orginal install disk of Windows Vista HP (bootable). But no go. Have also moved my boot drive to each of the other SATA connectors (there are six of them) and it would boot right up when started.

Maybe this has no bearing on the problem but never know. PC did have Windows Vista HP before installing the 90 day trial version of Windows 8 acquired from the Microsoft developer site. I sure DVD drives worked correctly before that. Anyway, It seems after Windows 8 my DVD drive would sometimes fail to read and it also seems that I was never able to burn after Windows 8. Cant say that is for sure facts as I am not sure of last time I tried to burn something. But now it will not read period. The warning I get is put a DVD in the drive. Not error reading disk or bad disk or anything like that. Its like it dont even see the disk. Device manager reports the the drive name, model, and that it is working properly.

I am inclined to think that it is some how related to a MOBO setting. So in ten days my trial version expires and with no way to install anything Im dead in the water. I will then have one over sized paper weight on my desk. Or, I can replace the MOBO that I am sure is not defective but is only a setting problem.

If your both drives are connected then no problem, if you are connecting one drive at a time using same data cable. I would suggest to try different sata port, & change both power and data cables.
Since, your motherboard is not being able to boot, then its nothing to do with OS.
My guess is, your BIOS may got a bug which is causing drive not to boot. Try updating your BIOS.
Check the drive with other pc if u can.
Try if u can get sata to usb converter. That can also boot your drive with dvd.

Okay i read up your update now.
Its okay then you have already tried.
What happens when you try to boot windows dvd? Does is not recognize? or its just drive tray came out after few seconds??
Means u can't see the dialog which says "Press any key to boot from cd or dvd...." ??

I think updating your bios might solve your problem.

At system boot with an OS Vista install disk in the DVD drive and with existing Windows 8 OS on hard drive the DVD drive make a few noises then boots from HD. No press any key to boot from DVD or any message at all.

Second try but this time hit F key to select boot device and select DVD drive. Same results. Dvd drive make a few noises then boots from hard drive.

Third try. This time with NTFS formatted hard drive with no OS installed or containing any files. Same thing.

Forth try. Same drive but hit F key and select DVD drive as boot device. Same thing.

You can see my frustration. Does not make any sense to me. I am open to any ideas..

If same thing is happening is both drives, then i can suspect your DVD.
Have you used this dvd to install os before and worked perfectly? or if u've just newly burned using drag and drop files?
Try if u have any other window just to see if it boots.
If u have an iso image, you can also install window for the timing using usb pendrive.
Microsoft has officially providing Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. You can use this tool to make bootable pendrive from an iso image.

Its not only the the Windows Vista DVD but all CD/DVDs. I even tried the Vista DVD in my laptop to see if it could read it and it did. I also booted from it on the same laptop and it booted to the installation program. I dont have another desktop to test the DVD drives in or I would. I will say this. I am reasonably sure both drives work just fine. One is less then a year old.

My only other option is to cobble together a test system minus the case from spare parts I have on hand to test the drives that way. I have everything needed. Don't really want to do that. If it works then it will be my new desktop. But it will be a dinosaur.

If your everything is ok then first go with BIOS update and then report back.
Read all the instructions before you do.

I did update the BIOS but no change. There are other updates available but are still in BETA. New Bios is 2205 3/2/2009 updated from 2101 ?/?/2006 from Asus website.

I'm not that expert. but when i went through it, it looks like having no problem. And the same it shows in device manager too "having no problem".
I think u might have already tried resetting your BIOS.
also try changing AHCI to IDE or vice versa.

I would say, if you want to install OS, install via making bootable usb.
Later then when u get time, write directly to Asus, or send your mobo on warranty (if not already expired)..
or try Asus forum. What else you can do!
The problem is now like beyond our reach.

I am reasonably adapt at solving most PC problems I encounter. Either through personal knowledge or research using the internet. In cases were I am unable to solve it myself I then turn to the forums. I thank you for your time. Maybe someone else will come along, see my post and have a solution.
