But I don't believe you'd need a driver specifically for the DVD drive, the SATA controller should do that just fine?

If the issue is DVD playback in Windows 10, it's not a lack of a driver - it's the lack of "native" support for playback in the OS.
Download something like VLC player and it'll play DVD's fine.
