dvd hardware decoder?

Well, here's the deal. I have a $75 best buy gift card, and I think I have finally figured out what to do with it. I want to get a dvd-rom player. On the bestbuy site, I saw a Creative Labs 12x drive for $99. For $50 more I saw what appeared to be the same drive bundled with a hardware decoder card. I have a duron 700@1000, 128mb pc100 ram, and a prophet mxII video card. Should I spend the extra $50, and get the decoder card, or will software decoding work just as well on my setup? For the time being, I don't intend to watch movies on anything other than my monitor, and I don't have a dolby 5.1 setup (though I wish I did).

Software decoding should be fine on your computer.
