DVD not detected even after replacing with a new one.

I am baffled beyond the beyond. My dvd drive is not detected anywhere in my computer. Some very rare occasions it will just appear. Minutes later, and its gone again. My hard drive is over do for a reformate but without a dvd drive I am sol. I need the notebook for college studies. Please, if one could be so kind as to let me know my options here.

I would replace the data cable for the drive. Take a look in event viewer for errors.

Laptop, no cable.

Make sure the drive is seated tightly, put in any screws that hold it in if they are missing.
You can also go with an external USB drive, they are not too pricy on ebay, and even the generic ones I used work pretty well.
