Dvd problem

wiped out xp on my hpzv6130us laptop, upgraded to windows 7. Everything is going great except for my dvd player. it will play the video,but only a loud crackling noise for audio. Any ideas. the drive is a matshita uj-840d ata device. all other sounds are working correctly-cd's,music,windows souds,etc.
