DVD-ROM dilemma

Hi fellas,
I'm in the market for a new DVD-ROM drive and I have the choice between the following drives: Asus 12X, Pioneer 16X and Creative 12X. Did anyone have any experience with one of these (good or bad). I'd appreciate your recommendation.
Thanks

I have Pioneer 16x and it works well for me. How does it compare with others, I couldn't tell you, but here's one satisfied customer if that helps:)

Have also had good experiences with the Pioneer 16x.

I have a Pioneer 16/40x and have been happy with it but it is fairly new. It plays DVD, CD-R, and CD-RW. The reviews say it is running CDs at a very good speed but plays DVDs at a max of about 12x not 16x. I do not know how it compares to others. www.goroyalpc.com has them for only $81.00.

Why do you need such a fast DVD-Rom drive. In my experiance anything beyond 2x unnecessary unless you need the additional speed for normal CD-Rom duties.

Hi Shazam,
I just bought an Acer 1640A which is the same drive as the Pioneer 115/16x40. Heard a lot of good about them.

I agree with Pill... If it is just for DVD movies, than why do you need above a 2x? The movies at their fastest only need a DVD2x read, and even that is usually burst anyway. If it is solely for DVD than don't waste the cash on a fast one. The software isn't coming out on dvd yet anyway, with the exception of encarta and a few others.

Movie do only need 2x max but why not get a fast one when they are selling for only $80.00. If you get a fast one you can read CDs faster and rip DVDs faster and when software does come out on DVD you will be ready.

Who thinks $80.00 is too much for a 16x/40x?

I too have the Pioneer 16x. No problems. This is the first one I've owned so I have no comparison.
