DVD to Android-viewable content

I'm getting ready to go on a road trip and would like to convert some of our DVDs to a format that can be viewed on a Samsung tablet. In the past, we've carried a laptop but since we have the tablet there's really no need. I've never done this before and I've done some basic online research, but everything I see seems to be advertising for some software that costs $30-$50. I'm looking for an inexpensive way to do this.

Also, I'm not asking to break any copyright protections. These are DVDs that we legitimately own, I am just curious about getting them into a portable format. Any assistance is appreciated.
