DVD Writer? HAH!

I have WInXP(SP1) and Lite-On's DVD writer. I can create
movies on a DVD up to the disk's size (4+GB) but any
attempt to mave that much data in the form of FILES fails.
XP cannot see the DVD in the drive and none of the bundled
programs appear to write data disks. Am I missing
something? Some sort of setting in XP? TIA.

Windows XP does not include software to write DVDs. You'll need to contact
the author of your DVD software.

Thanks, Ted. I kinda figured that after wading through all
the Lite-On stuff. The only way they will write data is in
"backup" format - which I don't want to do. Do you know of
any third-party software that will just handle 4.7Gb the
same as a 740Mb CD?

4 Gig is a number of special significance to file systems.

It is the largest single file supported by FAT32. If the DVD software
asembles the image on the hard drive, and if the hard drive is FAT32, then
the 4 Gig limit. However, if the hard drive is NTFS, then this limit does
not apply. I have both FAT32 and NTFS partition, and always use the latter
as scratch space for DVD writing.

I recall that 4 Gig may also be a limit to the UDF file system. UDF (also
called InCD, DLA, or packet writing) is the format used for optical media,
which allows you to drag-n-drop data. Video DVDs also have some limit,
maybe 2 Gig, which is why they have multiple *.VOB files.

But, the bottom line is getting software that can handle these details for
you, if necessary converting large images into multiple smaller DVD files.
The latest Easy CD or Nero should do that.
