My new build has been working perfectly for about four days, today there was a sudden loud bang that came from my optical drive along with the smell of burnt wires. There was nothing in the drive at the moment and my PC kept working fine. I restarted my PC and my bios showed that there is no optical drive. when windows launches i opened the computer icon which did show my optical drive! i inserted a dvd and the drive seemed to be working well. Any suggestions?

Solution
Hi
the only thing I can think of that would allow the DVD drive to continue to function would be a smoothing capacitor in relation to the motor has burnt out.
This could affect the speed stability of the motor and lead to read/write errors.
The safest thing to do would be to replace the drive but it may continue to function OK.
