I use my VGA cable from my monitor to my graphics card but since it doesn't have a VGA connector I use an adapter to plug the VGA into the DVI port.

I used this with my previous computer and it worked just fine. I built my first computer and now it uses DVI-D (old on used DVI-I) but now when I turn on the monitor it says "No VGA Cable" it's really frustrating so can someone help and explain.

Also the menu buttons don't work on my monitor and on a different monitor when I checked sources, both VGA and DVI couldn't be found on my computer

Solution
"-D' means "Digital Only". There are several flavours of DVD interface. DVI-I provides the signals necessary to drive VGA monitors on dedicated pins.
This picture will make it clear for you.

Bottom line: You need a new monitor.
