I got a brand new DVI D cable to DVI D so I could connect my monitor (dvi d) to the other dvi d port in my Gigabyte 980 G1 card, however theres no signal.

Originally I have always used the VGA Cable that came with the monitor and used a DVI I adapter to connect it to the videocard, and there hasnt been a single issue (outside some weird lines due to the conversion from vga to dvi on the screen when gaming).

So there are some possible problems

  • The videocard dvi d port is faulty.
The Monitor dvi d port is faulty.
    The cable is faulty.

I could try changing the cable, but is there something wrong that I am doing here? Should I get a DVI D to DP port (I dont think the 980 has a hdmi port only some ports that look like it, but are DP)? Or VGA to DP?

Update Checked the card again and it does have an HDMI port.

Ok let's just forget vga and adapter. You need to get another dvi cable or monitor to find out if it's the dvi port or dvi cable that's the issue. Should have asked this earlier but did you select dvi on the monitor input selection?

I am using a DVI D dual link, both ends. Could this be the problem? I heard of some people talking about the frequencies of monitors simply not accepting the DVI. Right now, using a VGA (Monitor) to VGA with a DVI I dual link converter I am getting these types of lines when playing any videogame, I am told that this happens due to using a converter.

Image for DVI type cables was too large. Heres the link.

In the store I bought its called Startech Cable 3m Length for DVI D Screen Dual link

What about a DVI D to HDMI?

VGA to HDMI would give me the same problems as with the converter? Because it weill be converting an analog signal to digital right?

Well these are the specs of the card I have, it does say it have a DVI D port

Well the card has a DVI I and a DVI D, both of 24 pins, then 3 dp and 1 hdmi

I was wondering, will the signal be good if I try a DVI D (24 pin) from the Monitor to HDMI? I will return this cable tomorrow so even if the dvi d port is faulty I dont think the HDMI one is. If it doesnt work then I will be inclined to believe that the DVI D port in the monitor is faulty.

It's either the port or the cable. Dvi-d is compatible will any dvi and single link or dual link won't matter as long as it has the holes to plug it in because it'll use whatever is available. You're getting some kind of interference which analog is more prone to. The issue is not caused by converting. Use any other port and they'd be fine because they're digital.

So basically the issue is related to the adapter I am using? Afterall I am using a VGA to VGA cable connected to a DVI I adapter.

Uh how can I do this? I get no signal when the cables are plugged.

Ok I know how to change it, let me turn off pc and try this, hope it works

Well heres the deal guys, the cable works, the port works and the monitor works I just had to change the input, my mistake.

I feel like I wasted ya'll time.

Is there a way to reward both of you, you two helped me a lot.
