Hello everyone. Can you plug a dvi-D cable into a dvi-I slot? I would like to plug a dvi-D cable from my graphics card (4gb gtx 960) into my monitors dvi-D port.

The reason I ask is because on my new computer my graphics card has a dvi-I connection and my monitor only supports dvi-D and vga. I can't use vga because my graphics card does not support vga.

Thanks.

DVI-I outputs can use DVI-D and DVI-A cables as the plug that connects to the graphics card's DVI-I output while the plug on the other end can be either digital (DVI-D or HDMI) or analogue (DVI-A or VGA/DSUB), depending on whether the plug connecting to the graphics card is digital (DVI-D) or analogue (DVI-A).

The only common monitor input that a DVI-I port can't work with is Displayport because DVI does not support Displayport signaling without an active converter. The above connectivity options are all supported because DVI-I has the necessary pins for all of these ports and uses the same digital signaling as HDMI or analogue signaling as VGA/DSUB.

DVI-I on a graphics card is very convenient because it lets you use pretty much any monitor and modern TV with cheap cables and no need for expensive, hit-or-miss for compatibility active converters :)
