Okay so this might be a stupid question, but I honestly have no idea when it comes to displays or any of that. The monitor I have is an acer V233H, and it says on the box "1080 HD", yet doesnt have a hdmi port. So, I went out and bought a DVI to HDMI adapter. Before this, I was using vga. I cant tell a difference in the picture quality though. Is there a difference in the qualities of the two?

I'm pretty sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, the acer does not have hdmi because it has no speakers and the HDMI spec calls for audio over the cable.
I have an acer p216hv with no hdmi but works fine with dvi as they both are digital signals.
think of hdmi as a smaller dvi with audio.

Having used both vga and DVI simultaneously on monitors side by side you really have to look for visual differences.

1080 refer to the resolution, 1920x1080. It doesn't suggest what type of connections the monitor may have.
As for DVI or VGA. VGA is an analog connection while DVI is digital. There should not be any difference in the capabilities at that resolution. However, since the VGA signal is analog, there can be interference as the signal travel along the cable. That may cause some artifacts in the image.

So all and all, did I make the right choice of getting the adapter?

yes
