Hello,
I'm trying to find a DVI-I cable that will let me plug either my old monitor (VGA) or a newer one with DVI-D. My graphic card can do that (I know that from my current setup). I'm just looking for an extension cable to move my screen further away from my computer. I don't want to buy a DVI to VGA cable because eventually, VGA will disappear from my setup.

As fas as I could understand, DVI-I is good for both the digital and analogue signals. I was looking around for cables and I found the "Delock Extension cable DVI 24+5 male > female 5 m" (http://www.delock.de/produkte/F_669_DVI-24-5--Stecker---Buchse_83109/merkmale.html) with these specs:

Description
This cable by Delock enables you to extend your DVI interface and can be used for connection of DVI devices like, e.g. monitor etc.

Specification
• Connector: DVI-I 24+5 male > DVI-I 24+5 female
• Signal DVI 24+1, VGA is not connected
• Male connector with screws / female connector with screw nuts
• Cable gauge: AWG 28
• Connector gold-plated
• 2 x ferrite cores
• Cable length: ca. 5 m
• Colour: black

Being a DVI-I cable, I was assuming the cable would support both digital and analogue signals. Now in the description I can read: "Signal DVI 24+1, VGA is not connected". So that puzzled me quite a bit. What's the point of calling it a DVI-I if the analogue VGA signal won't be usable. Or I am missing something here?

If anyone as a clue what "Signal DVI 24+1, VGA is not connected" actually means, please tell me!

I'm assuming they mean it carries VGA with the "+5". The problem is if your card is DVI-D, it doesn't output the VGA/+5 signal. So the cord carries it, but it never got it. What you need, other than a new monitor that has more current connections, is an active DVI to VGA adapter. Will probably be around $12-20 online. Make sure it's an ACTIVE adapter.

I agree.
Best regards from Sweden.

I already have two recent monitors. I want to use the old one with the VGA as third monitor.

This VGA monitor is currently, right now as I type, connected to my graphic card. It's connected to a VGA to DVI adapter that is itself connected to the video card. Obviously, if I can type right now, the video card can actually send the signal to the monitor.

Now, the only thing I want with this setup is a longer cable between my video card and my VGA monitor.

So is this setup already carrying VGA with the "+5"?

(Obviously, I did a Google search already.)

It shows the pins in the picture but the description says NO. How could anyone, without the cable to test, tell you one way or another? You could ask the manufacturer, but unless you find someone with that cable, or choose to buy it, you will never know.

I do not think it will work.
What I believe they are saying is that they use the 24+5 standard dual link dvi-i connectors but only use 24+1 cabling which is dual link dvi-d; hence the cable is not a dvi-i.

Best bet is to call the company and see what they say, but that's the way I read it.
