DVI-I works on GPU but not DVI-D?

Hello,
I have an old GTX780 and it has two DVI ports: DVI-D and DVI-I.
My monitor is a Dell U2312HM which has a DVI-D. I have a Single-link DVI-D cable.
I'm planning to upgrade my GPU and I found out that it has only one DVI port thats DVI-D.
Currently my setup works with DVI-D (monitor) -> DVI-I (GPU) but not DVI-D (GPU).
DVI-D -> DVI-D on the motherboard works however.
Can anyone explain why this is and will I be fine upgrading to the new GPU whilst keeping everything else?
Thanks.

Solution
Hi, It could be a faulty port on the old card. If the new card is compatible with the board/power supply, then the DVI port should work.
