DVI problems causing confusion

I'm having problems with DVi. I ave been using the HDMI from my graphics card (GTX 970) just fine but I decided I wanted to try a second monitor through the graphics cards DVI-I (Dual Link). I first tried using an older monitor with only VGA on it so so i bought a DVI adapator that would connect to the VGA cable. Using this, windows would identify the monitor but no matter what I tried- changing resolutions etc- I could not get a video signal on the monitor. I then tried a newer monitor which has a DVI-D (dual link) port and tried connecting the DVI-D (Single link) cable that came with it, but again there was no signal on the monitor even when I restarted the computer. Do you know what could be wrong here?

If disconnecting the HDMI and starting with only the DVI one, does it work?

I tried this and got no signal so had to revert back to HDMI using the monitors AUTO button.

Then either cable, or monitor do not work. Or... the card's DVI port, but... less probable.
