dvi to hdmi converter for 144hz

My GPU only has HDMI and VGA, I want to have 144hz but then you need DVI. Do I need to buy a converter like this one https://www.4launch.nl/product/63586/063586-Club3D-PC-HDMIATI3_4-DVI-%3EHDMI or do I not have to buy anything to have 144hz? At the moment it's on 60hz, if I buy the converter can I have 144hz or only 60hz?

No, no converter will increase the bandwidth of the source to allow for 144hz. 144hz needs either a dual link DVI port or display port.

It would be odd if your xfx 7970 didn't have a dual link DVI port. Can you post a link to the model or a pic?

I have tried this in the past because I was curious but I'm afraid that it won't work. HDMI can apparently output up to 120Hz if it's HDMI 1.4 and above, but this didn't work for me... DVI-D (DVI Dual Link) outputs 144Hz and Display Port also works for 144Hz. Display Port is generally the best for 144Hz but I am using DVI-D.

A convertor does not work for 144Hz in my experience and I'm 100% sure you can only get 144Hz using DVI-D and Display Port.

Ah sorry guys thank you all for your answers my brother said it was VGA just before he left but it actually was DVI.
