DVI to HDMI problem

So i bought an dvi to hdmi adapter for my lcd monitor to hook up to my pc , but the monitor doesnt have an dvi port , when i connect the adapter on the pc and the hdmi on the monitor i get a picture , when i started playing around i managed to get my home screen back but the resolution is extremely big , i tried everything , played with the refresh rates and resolutions but didnt help at all , help ?

Might be a bad adapter.
I used a Startech dvi to hdmi cable and never had any issues.

It configures it as a dual monitor , when i go to resolution it says dual monitor , i make it to only show 1st monitor but the resolution is still big , just today i got the adapter and the hdmi cabel is ok because ive been using it on my ps3 for a long time
