Are you plugging into a DVI-I or DVI-D port? It makes all the difference in the world.

DVI-I = 4 additional pins carrying the analog VGA signal.
DVI-D = Digital ONLY. No pins for analog.
A DVI-I adapter will NOT fit a DVI-D port.
