DVI to VGA to HDMI

Hello,

I was trying to hook up my apple tv to my old tv, and i thought i might do this by purchasing a VGA to HDMI converter. problem was that my tv only has a dvi connection, so i had to purchase a DVI to VGA cable as well. I've now plugged it like this: Apple TV (HDMI)->HDMI to vga converter->VGA to DVI cable->DVI to TV. Does anyone know why this doesn't work, and also perhaps what i could do about it?

I'm wondering if what's happening is when you go from HDMI to VGA, you're losing that digital signal. If I'm not mistaken, VGA does not support things like audio and other features of a digital signal, so when you're taking it from HDMI to VGA, you're losing all of that information, so when trying to convert it back to DVI (also digital), it's not able to transfer that information.

So the TV is DVI and the Apple TV is HDMI. Since both are digital signals, I'm thinking it might work to have an HDMI to DVI adapter, which should be available online.

Thanks very much for the useful info. And just to ask something stupid again; will an adapter like this transfer sound as well? If it doesn't, i would probably need a jack to optical cable to connect to the tv audio in. or an optical to phono directly into my stereo. Does any of these two cable types exist?

You're converting the signal twice and its getting lost along the way. Going HDMI to VGA converts it from Digital to Analog. Trying to go VGA to DVI is going back from Analog to Digital.

I'm not fully understanding the connections you have, but if your Apple TV has HDMI, all you need is an HDMI to DVI cable. You DO NOT need any type of adapter to go from HDMI to DVI, you simply need a cable.

If your apple TV has VGA (and thats originally why you were going to HDMI), then use the adapter you have that goes from VGA to HDMI, and then from that adapter use an HDMI to DVI Cable.

To answer your other question, no matter what if you conver HDMI to VGA or DVI you are going to loose sound. Out of the 3 formats, HDMI is the only one that carries sound so if you convert the signal anywhere you're going to loose sound.

Good point about the cord. I wasn't thinking when I said to grab an adapter. A cord that's HDMI to DVI would be appropriate in this case. Sorry if I caused any confusion! I was just taking a stab at it as I know sometimes it helps to bounce ideas around a little about an issue.
