DVI - Why won't it fit?

I bought an HDMI to DVI cable to connect my monitor to my laptop. My laptop only has HDMI and my monitor only has VGA and DVI. When I try to plug in the DVI end to the monitor, it wont go in all the way and just falls out. If I power up the screen and hold the DVI end in by hand, it recognises the connection but says "No Signal" - probably because it isn't connected fully I'd assume.
I've attached images of the male and female connections. Any ideas?

That doesn't look like a standard DVI. Most of them have a little cross pin where yours only has a straight one. In fact there are two different DVI standards entirely, DVI-I and DVI-D.

I am fully aware of the differences between DVI-I and DVI-D. In this case, my female and male connections are both DVI-D (to my knowledge, at least), so with this established, why does the male not fit into the female?
Also, I accidentally selected your answer as best, can somebody either undo this, or tell me how to undo it please?

The connection wont go in far enough for the fully extended screws to reach their sockets :/

It's brand new. It connects just fine and displays an image on a different monitor. However, on a third monitor, I get the exact same problem :/

Looking at the end of that DVI part of the cable, it looks like it may be a quality issue. I have one of these and I looked at it closely. The border, or edge of the connector that surrounds the pins does not have any wavy variation like yours does. Specifically at the top where it appears to me in your photo that the center part bulges up a little more than the rest of the top.

Look at the border of that cable. Try pinching that top (wider) part of the border rim to equal the rest of it. Also, the bottom left of the cable end rim/edge of the connector looks punched up. Have you ever used this cable before or is there anything you could have done to bend the lip around the pins? If not, that's a very poor quality cable connector and I'd be suspect of the quality of the cable overall if whoever made it can't even put a decent DVI connector on it.

Yes, it is a cheap cable. But I'd like to point out that on a different monitor of mine, the cable works just fine, displaying an image perfectly.
However, on a third monitor, I get the same problem as the original monitor. I'm starting to think the problem is the monitor.

It is a brand new cable, arrived in the post today. I do not believe there's any way I could have bent it, though I'm not saying its impossible I was just careless in it's handling.

Please read the original post. This would achieve the same thing as holding the socket in by hand, which I tried and gained me no success.

Well comparing mine to yours on the DVI end, I'm afraid you may have bought a poor quality cable. This is mine. Note there is no "wavy" variation in the lip around the pins and it is straight all the way around when you zoom in:

Then how does one explain that the very same cable still produces a perfect image on a different monitor?

Well scratch my previous reply out. If this cable worked on another monitor but not the one you are trying to use it for, I don't know what to tell you. Does that other monitor accept another DVI cable?

VGA, but my laptop only has HDMI available. I guess I'll just have to go purchase an HDMI to VGA adapter 🙁
