I have an old Gateway DX4831-01e and want to upgrade the CPU, but I am having a hard time finding out which cpu's it supports. Now what I WANT to put into it is a Xeon X3440 or X3450 since they are cheap and good, or at least better than the I3-530 that is in it right now. But I cannot figure out if the motherboard supports it even if i flashed it (Im OK with flashing the motherboard and I planned to as well). Does anyone know if I can use a Xeon processor, specifically the X34xx's, on the Gateway DX4831-01e. And i am also wondering if the drivers for it is the same as the DX4831 since gateway doesn't not come up with the DX4831-01e when trying to search for the drivers.

Also; if it cannot work for some reason what cpu's would work and be MUCH better than the I3-530 for $25 of less
Thanks for the help!

Solution
No, a Xeon is not compatible with that mobo.

Best upgrade for that mobo would be the i7 880, but due to shortages, new chips or are usually at $200 plus. Look in your second-hand markets for options.

Ok thank you, would an I5 750 or i5 760 work then?

Yes.

This is a walk through of what worked for me.

Updated stock gateway dx4831-01e, Windows 10, had bios version from 2009 (you may or may not need to update bios) . stock was i3 540, 6gb ddr 3, onboard graphics. original hdd drive. 430 watt power supply not stock installed 5 years ago.

Installed:
Intel Core i7-870 2.93GHz Quad Core 8MB LGA1156 CPU Processor SLBJG socket 1156.
16 gb ddr3.
msi gtx 960 4gb.

You NEED to do this in order.
I flashed bios to 2010 version (you may not need to do this).
Remove old ddr3 ram, install 2 sticks of 2x4gb in slots with BLACK clips.
Boot and go into bios, set bios to not stop on any errors, should boot up.
Download drivers for your GPU, power down.
install GPU of your choice x16 slot, attach monitor cable to new gpu port, i used hdmi, boot up, it should work (give it a few minutes went black screen for a bit) then install drivers for GPU once windows is loaded, power down.
Install i7 CPU and boot up should boot no problem, power down.
(had 4 pin power to plug into 8 pin atx on mobo, got adapter to convert to 8 pin as running i7 now. Ran fine with 4 pin)
install 2x4gb ddr3 into TAN ram slots.
(will run with just 8gb of ram in black clip slots).
runs fine except going to upgrade to a sata ssd as this is slowing things down. Whole revamp cost around $170 from used items eblay.
