DX9 GPU still works with new games?

I gave to a friend my really old GPU which is the 9600gt. This card is only DX9 and can be updated to a DX11 but it is still DX9 right? As I remember when I tried to open a game called "Alien Isolation" a message comes up, it said that "This game only supports dx11". Not sure if that's the exact message though. So my friend wants to know if he buys a game like resident evil 7 which just came out on january. Will he be able to play it or even open it? Because new games that are coming out are using mostly DX11 and DX12.

No. Its too old, and it cant be updated to DX 11, that is hardware it is missing as it wasnt out yet. He can play DX 9 games sure. Otherwise, buy something new.

Firstly can that game even run resident evil 7 secondly the card is too old and last if you want to make sure you can play a game on steam in the required specs section check what direct x version you need.

1. The 9500 GT is a DX 10 card.
2. There is no way to upgrade it to use DX 11
3. Some games use a combined DX 10/11 render path, those games might work on a DX 10 card.
4. You would need a more recent GPU. For DX 11 support one of the Geforce 400 or Radeon HD 5000 series or newer. (Not looking at the actual performance needed. Those will be way higher for recent games For RE7 for excample you would something like a RX 470 to play on 1080p, max settings. For Alien Isolation something like a R7 270 or GTX 760 or cards with similar performance would be a good point)

Some games can be forced to run in Directx 9 mode, if they have a DX9 mode. I'm seeing more and more newer games that are DX 11 and 12 only though. Keep in mind that even if a game can be run in DX9 it doesn't mean that card has the power to run the game well. As far as I know the new Resident Evil game is only DX11.
