Does anyone know exactly what causes this error? There's so many probables over the net that are dated.

Obviously it's related to my graphics drivers and Direct X, I only ever get it from time to time.

They may not be OC related but its good to rule it out so you can try other solutions. I would turn off the OC completely and if you get no crashes then that's a good clue, you could lower it down slowly but it may take time to find what clock is pushing it over the edge.

Well its always been said that in BF4 and many other BF games sometimes during your install that file only gets partially installed or its an old version something like that and running that installer fixes it. I have run it before worst case it will do nothing so its worth a try. Well don't quote me on this but I believe the OS just has support for games made with DX11, DX12, etc the games are what contain the actual directx files specific to that game. The directx...
I'm pretty sure I only experience it with Battlefield 4 and yes it occurs randomly. For example, I played BF4 for about half an hour and then quit the game as normal. I started the game up again about 10-15 mins later and the error occurred about 2 mins into game causing crash. I restarted the game straight away and ran it as normal again for another half hour or so. The FPS this time though was a bit unstable possibly related to crash earlier.

Maybe a system reboot is still required after such a crash to clear things up?

A reboot couldn't hurt. These errors are very common in battlefield games I saw quite a few in the BF1 beta, but I haven't seen one in bf4 for a while. Many things can cause it, from my experience pushing things too far is often the culprit. Try lowering your gpu overclock a bit and see if they stop, turn down in game settings a bit particularly MSAA or if you have resolution scale set over 100.

If that doesn't work try reinstalling directx for bf4. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 4, click on the _installer folder, click the directx folder, click the redist folder, scroll down until you see DXSETUP.exe, run that and go through the installer.

Let me know if none of that works and we can try a user.cfg file.

Thanks I'll give these a shot. I didn't experience this crash when I played the BF1 beta luckily. I run BF4 pretty much maxed (ultra) and I've recently upped the resolution scale to 115% to add a bit of gloss after playing the BF1 for a week haha. I still had this crash prior to upping the res scale.

That leaves my overclock's and I've had other games evidently crash being clock related but because the DX crashes in BF4 are so random I wondered if they were really OC related. Only way to know is by reducing the clocks for a week or two.

What would happen to the DX installation to warrant a re-installation? I was also wondering, how can games include the DX installation package in their games when a stand alone package isn't available to download from Microsoft? DX12 is included in the Win 10 installation correct me if wrong...

Would you recommend slowing lowering the OC or starting from stock and moving back up?

The directx package you would get online is just a framework it does not contain the files specific to a directx game.
