E-Machine memory

Hi trying to upgrade mem is my cousins UK spec E Tower 600cd.It has 32 mb pc100 as standard(cel 600 cpu) tried an extra 32mb major on 3rd alongside in 2nd slot ..wont boot...thought could be duff .Swapped for 64 mb pc100 non ecc tried to boot with just new mem tried either slot ...wont boot ...fit original mem ..boots ok??..anyone familiar with e machines whats the procedure for installing memory in these. mo/bo has integrated sound & graphics..any help out there thanks ..Neil

I've always used standard PC100 and never had a problem on emachines. You might have wierd memory.

I have tried 2 sticks of ram no joy can you spec the ram that works for you...and is it a case of just slotting it in and re-booting do you have to alter any settings e.t.c...Thanks Neil

I've used 3 ram types in the systems I've had-generic Samsung chip PC 100, generic Hyundia chip PC 100, and generic LG chip PC 133. All three worked, I just turned the unit off, plugged it in, and turned the unit back on. Are you sure the other memory you tried was in the right way and seated properly? Or maybe you might have used some weird memory, like EDO dimms instead of SDRAM?

Just tried the 64mb in my machine alongside my 2x128 sticks works fine???the mem is also generic pc100 but for some reason the e-machine don't like it..any other ideas...Neil

It won't boot with just the new memory installed? I can't think of what the problem might be! Did you remember to UNPLUG the computer before putting in the ram? If not you might have damaged it! Some parts of the board stay on as long as the power is plugged in!

Not really sure, but I know some sytems stay "hot" so they can boot faster.

The memory is not damaged as it works FINE in my machine...Neil

Sorry, I can't help you further. It worked for me and not for you. You unplugged the power before you installed it and even tried running just the new one to make sure it was not a problem with compatability with the old unit. All I can suggest now is reading the serial numbers from the original model and trying to look them up at the manufacturers website. One other solution is to buy some memory for your specific system from Crucial using their memory finder, as they garruntee theirs to work.
